When we bought our house, we knew that the basement could be awesome! It is one big, open space. And we've had big plans for it. However, in the months since we moved in, it had become a dumping ground, and not somewhere we ever went. Now that Gabe is mobile, we realized just how important it was for us to utilize this space.
We would love to someday completely finish the space, but there are a few hurdles we must overcome. 1. Finances 2. We're not exactly sure how the space will need to function in the future. aka: Do we need another bedroom?!? 3. Finances. Ha!
Which led to this makeover. It is just that, a makeover. A way to make the space useable. And I would have to say, it came out AWESOME.
Without further ado....The BASEMENT!
We will start at the top. The stairs. When you buy a new house without a finished basement, you get gross, ugly, unfinished plywood steps. Well, a little paint sure can make a difference :)
Which leads to the floor. This was actually the jumping off point of the whole makeover. We felt that if this was to be a space we were in and using, we had to address the bare concrete. We decided to go with a gray Rustoleum Basement Epoxy/Sealer. It actually went down quite smoothly (once we moved all of our crap and cleaned the floor really well) We applied half and then about a week later, the other half. We did have to do a little touch up along the way, but we are very happy with the result.
The walls are next. We wanted to make the space a little brighter, so we cleaned and applied a light gray basement wall paint. Not only does it seem to open the space, but should help seal the walls.
And now the full tour. We divided the space into a few different areas. Obviously we needed a living/play area. We had already bought the carpet remnant on sale last summer, and with the purchase of new living room furniture, our old couch and chairs have been moved downstairs.
We created a storage area with two large metal shelving units. It also somewhat blocks our ugly mechanical stuff that is in the corner.
Then I had the awesome idea to bolt pegboard to the back of the shelves to create our "hobby" area. Our work table fit perfectly on the back side, just like it was designed for this :) I totally take credit for this design and am very proud of myself!! I love when a plan comes together!
And here is our workout space since both Noah and I are absolutley addicted to working out!! bahahaha!
Those of you that know Noah well, know how avid of a reader he is, so these were a necessity in the new space. They will also house Gabe's toys/junk in the future. We were so happy to stumble upon these on sale at Target. They work perfect in the space.
And that is our lovely basement! Pictures don't quite tell the whole story so you all should probably just stop by sometime to get the full effect ;)
